Fruit Name List in English (With Free Fruit Flashcards)
Food is a universal aspect of human culture, making it a perfect place to start your child's English fluency. Last week we looked at vegetable names that you can teach your child and use in everyday life. This week, we are going to learn English fruit vocabulary. Teaching your child about fruit in English can be a great opportunity to introduce them to a world of amazing flavors. From the common apple to the exotic litchi, learning fruit vocabulary can help you reinforce English as an everyday habit that will turn your child into a confident English speaker.
If you want to download a set of free fruit flashcards, you can take a look at the bottom of our post, below the fruit name list in English, and click on the "Free Fruit Flashcards" picture.

Fruit Name List in English
For this fruit name list in English, we have included pictures and the plural forms of each fruit to help you more easily teach your child. I find it is easier for children to learn plurals alongside their singular counterparts. Knowing both are important for any sentences that they will be making, so you might as well teach them together while homeschooling. As well, teaching singular and plural forms together should reduce confusion as your child gets older. If you come from a language without these kinds of conjugations, it will be far easier to get your child thinking about plurals early on, rather than later on in life.
Generally speaking, fruits are all countable nouns. However, one thing you may need to teach your children is the words slices and pieces. Many kinds of fruit are usually cut up before you eat them. This can include larger fruit like watermelons or smaller ones like oranges. When eating these kinds of fruit, you will often ask for a slice or a piece of that fruit, instead of the whole thing. So rather than asking for a whole watermelon ("May I have a watermelon please?"), you would only ask for one piece ("May I have a piece of watermelon please?"). Again, teaching these kinds of distinctions between the whole fruit and a piece of fruit will be helpful early on, and this practice should be encouraged when your child asks for fruit.
Apple (two slices or pieces of apple / apples)
Orange (two slices or pieces of orange / two oranges)
Cherry (two cherries)
Strawberry (two strawberries)
Grape (two grapes / a bunch of grapes)
Pineapple (two pieces of pineapple / two pineapples)
Mango (two mangoes)
Lime (two limes)
Lemon (two lemons)
Litchi (two litchis)
Pomegranate (two pomegranate seeds / two pomegranates)
Pear (two pears)
Watermelon (two pieces of watermelon / two watermelons)
Honeydew Melon(two pieces of honeydew melon/ two honeydew melons)

How to Practice Fruit Vocabulary
Practicing fruit vocabulary should happen every day. Here are some easy ideas you can use to get more practice with your kids.
Fruit Flashcards, Drawing, and Coloring
Drawing is a great way to help children learn new things. It unleashes their imagination and gives them time to process all of the new information you are giving them. For this reason, it is one of my favorite teaching methods.
Drawing also happens to be a great method for helping children retain the information that they are learning. Drawing can help children learn because it involves different portions of the brain and causes more neural connections to be formed. The more connections that are formed, the longer the brain will remember what you are teaching. So by getting them to draw and color this vocabulary, you can help your child store this English fruit vocabulary in their long-term memory. As well, you can use our fruit name list in English to help give them something to base their drawings off of to make it a little easier for them.
Unfortunately, not all children can draw yet. For those children, it is not worth forcing them to draw as it could cause them to get frustrated or angry. The goal is to have them enjoy and think about the vocabulary, so anger is not going to help us. For this reason, we have prepared some pre-made flashcards that you can use for free. Just click on the link below, download them, and print them off. They are in black and white, so your child can still enjoy coloring the pictures however they like.
Vocabulary Games
Flashcards are also useful tools for teaching because we can use them in vocabulary games and activities. My personal favorite flashcard games can be found in this post on phonics games. Please try not to use flashcards as memory drill tools. This is boring, and you don't want your child to dislike English time. Instead, try playing games like hide the flashcard, flashcard race, or just come up with your own games! Don't forget that the more interested your child is in a subject, the more likely they are to learn it successfully.
You can also take a look at our post on board games, which includes a free board game that you can download. Use this in conjunction with your flashcards to help your child learn this fruit vocabulary quickly.
Songs and Videos To Learn the Name of Fruit in English
Songs and videos are another great way for children to learn things. Luckily, children usually like them too. Here is some awesome content to help you teach your children about different kinds of sentence patterns and the name of fruit in English.
Don't stress too much if your child is slow to pick up on all of the vocab in these songs. This is especially true if you are homeschooling your child in a second language because these videos were often made for native speakers. Over many listens, your child will absorb these sentences, and this will help your child's overall English development.
Eating Fruit and Visits to the Grocery Store
I think it is pretty safe to say that everyone loves to eat fruit. So why teach your child about fruit in English by only showing them pictures? Take them out to the grocery store or local fruit shop, pick up one of everything, and have a memorable day of learning English the fun way.
What are Some Fun Activities You Can do to Learn the Name of Fruit in English?
1. Taste test and rank the fruit by flavor
2. Blindfold and guess which fruit it is
3. Taste test fruits based on the region they are from
4. Cut up your child's favorite fruit and make a fruit salad for lunch
Fruit-Picking to Learn Fruit Vocabulary
Fruit doesn't just grow in grocery stores. Take a mini field trip out to some fruit orchards, and try picking some of your favorite fruit. Making your trip a memorable event can help your child remember the name of fruit in English better.
If you have some extra room, maybe you can try planting a fruit tree yourself. Have your child help you and document how it grows. Turn it into a science experiment, and give your child first-hand experience in how things grow. You'll also get some tasty fruit out of the deal. If you don't have room for a big apple tree, small lemon trees can be far more manageable for apartment dwellers. Take a look at this post to get some ideas on what fruit you can grow easily inside your apartment.

Final Thoughts
No child I have ever taught has disliked a lesson where they get to eat fruit, and I imagine you will have the same experience. Naturally delicious and great for you, a lesson on fruit in English is another food lesson that you can easily do to expand your child's vocabulary. Improving your child's English at home requires you to constantly introduce them to new words and reinforce old lessons. I hope our fruit name list in English and flashcard ideas have helped you do that. Fruit, and food in general, are easy to learn because they are something that children see every day. Make it a routine for children to ask for fruit in English or have them refer to the name of fruit in English when they are at home. These kinds of habits may appear small now, but over time they are a powerful way of building your child's overall English skills.
